RIZZANI DE ECCHER LANDS CONTRACT FOR AIRPORT TERMINAL EXPANSION IN ICELAND
01/14/2022

Rizzani de Eccher makes further inroads into the Icelandic construction market with the award of a prestigious contract by Icelandic airports and air traffic control operator Isavia ohf within the framework of Keflavik Airport’s planned expansion to accommodate over 12 million passengers by 2025.
Isavia operates all public airports and air navigation services in a vast area in the north-eastern Atlantic and is 100% owned by the Government of Iceland.
Iceland and Isavia play a crucial role in transatlantic flights from/to Europe and North America, as Keflavik serves as a connection hub for low cost flights to and from North America and Iceland’s strategic location in the North Atlantic has made it possible for mid-range twin engine jets like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 to be allowed to fly transatlantic routes.
In addition all flights crossing the North Atlantic are handled by Icelandic air traffic control (ATC) for a great part of the crossing, which makes of Isavia a key player in the transport infrastructure between Europe and North America.
Isavia has awarded Rizzani de Eccher with a two stages contract for the new construction of the south-east Terminal expansion, planned as the turn-key delivery of a two-storey building due to be operational from May 2023.
Global construction consultancy firm Mace Ltd from the UK advises Isavia on this project.
The existing terminal area is heavily overcrowded at peak hours, especially on the non-Schengen (US flights) level. The project will be executed by Rizzani de Eccher facing the challenges of a live airport environment
The building is made from structural steel, composite slabs and cladding system, with aesthetical motifs similar to the cladding system installed in recent extensions at the airport. The unitized curtain wall systems will be equipped with special sun shading and light capturing systems so as to adjust to the extreme sun-light variations between summer and winter at such northern latitudes. A new fixed link and a boarding bridge will be installed in the south-east corner of the extension, as well as wooden flooring and a recessed ceiling with good acoustics and lighting.
The project aims to be highly sustainable and is to achieve BREEAM Excellent Certification.
This project isn’t but one small phase of the many planned expansion projects undergoing at Keflavik Airport, and with this first project acquisition, Rizzani de Eccher and Isavia look forward to establishing a fruitful and long-lasting cooperation.
It is worth mentioning that Rizzani de Eccher has been operating in Iceland since early 2018 and is not new to Keflavik. At present the company is working on the other side of the Keflavik Airfield, the one used by NATO and the military, completing the delivery of certain hangar and apron installations for the US Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command.
